Planning with Water – Nature based Solutions for Future Cities and Landscapes

Planning with Water – Nature based Solutions for Future Cities and Landscapes

The catalogue gathers a range of general recommendations for the future management of water in both cities and rural areas. The recommendations and ideas were developed as part of the project ‘Vandets veje’, which is included in the joint initiative ‘Agenda Earth’ by the Danish Association of Architects and the Dreyer Foundation. The initiative puts words and images to the built environments and landscapes of the future and examines the legislative frameworks needed to make them possible.

The Green Tripartite Agreement provides a historic momentum for planning the landscapes of the future. Water must be seen as a resource, not an adversary, as we develop and protect our surroundings. It’s time that municipalities and planners more frequently turn to nature-based solutions as a tool for future-proofing our cities and landscapes.

The publication introduces a blue-green strategic point of departure as a significant concept in this transition. By presenting concrete examples of nature-based approaches and solutions, the aim is to inspire and qualify work with climate adaptation, land development, and the future safeguarding of cities and landscapes.

‘Climate change is a reality and challenges Denmark from several directions. Rainfall is increasing, groundwater levels are rising, and the sea is moving closer. This places new demands on how we develop and protect our cities, landscapes, and infrastructure. Water holds great potential. It can breathe life into new experiences in nature and contribute to restoration, strengthen biodiversity, and create places of beauty and tranquillity. It can frame recreational meeting spots, inspire new industries, and increase the desire to live and settle in areas where the presence of water is felt. By working with beautiful and holistic solutions, we do not just create functional climate adaptation but also lasting qualities that enrich both people and nature.’
