‘The competition for ARKENWALK in the city of Ishøj calls for a project that will make the walk from Ishøj Station to the art museum ARKEN an attraction that is a destination in its own right; give the citizens of Ishøj a chance to experience and interact with art on a daily basis; give the rest of Denmark and tourists from all over the world a chance to experience art outside the museum walls; motivate visitors and locals all all ages to venture outdoors to discover the urban space and into nature to move and be moved, be challenged and become curious; enhance connections in the modernistic city between station and art museum, between city centre and beach park, among different urban areas and among different people; demonstrate that art is for all, that art is changeable, and that city, art, architecture and nature can enter into a rewarding dialogue with each other – and with people.’
ARKENWALK is to connect Ishøj Station with the museum and mark a path that intuitively guides visitors back and forth. To achieve this effect we have laid out a red thread that is easily decoded. A robust and recognizable paving material that matches the mood in the internal axis at the Arken museum. A line that captures people’s curiosity and puts them in motion. A red carpet that reaches out to the urban space in various ways and breaks down the barrier between outside visitors and locals. ARKENWALK connects two end-points – the station and the museum – but the new and enhanced connection is also designed to stimulate new neighbourly relations between art institution and locals. ARKENWALK is intended as a flying carpet travelling through the area with local stops along the way for people to get on or off and thus contribute to the mental bridge-building. A chain with multiple anchors and an eventful eye-level navigation instrument that connects everyday life with art and nature in Ishøj.
