MODERATOR AT GRASP KNOWLEDGE FESTIVAL

Debate about the impact of culture on the city: how can urban developers and architects use art and culture to generate urban identity, development and communities?

Art and culture are sources of identity, social cohesion and community in cities. In many cities, museums, cultural institutions and festivals are actively used as catalysts of urban development and settlement strategies. Art and culture can generate engaging and dynamic environments and contribute to the city’s long-term development by attracting resources, knowledge and investments. But what do we actually know about the long-term effects of culturally driven urban development? What impact do art and culture have on the city over time? What kinds of considerations and accommodations can co-exist across artistic, institutional and political interests and collaborations?

These topics will be debated by a panel comprised of leading experts in culturally driven urban development from the Danish city of Holstebro, Copenhagen’s Nordhavn (North Harbour) district and the Oslo Architecture Triennale. The panel members are Pia Stræde Palmelund, director of Slagteriet, Lærke Hein, director of the Tunnel Factory, and Christian Pagh, director of the Oslo Architecture Triennale. Moderator: Boris Brorman.
