THE SKEJBY EFFECT

THE SKEJBY EFFECT

Reviews and essay about the conversion of healthcare architecture in Aarhus as part of the ongoing theme ‘urban district and city’, which began in Arkitekten 10/2022 with a look at the conversion of Frederiksberg Hospital to a new urban district.

‘The municipal reform in 2007 led to the construction of regional “super hospitals” on previously undeveloped land and, consequently, to vacated hospital buildings in cities throughout the country. On the following pages, we will focus mainly on Aarhus, where the establishment of Skejby Hospital resulted, in part, in the conversion and extension of the buildings of the former Psychiatric Hospital Risskov (M. G. Bindesbøll, 1852), a project that is now nearing its completion. The Municipal Hospital (Kay Fisker and C. F. Møller, 1931) is being transformed into a new campus of Aarhus University, and the master plan for the transformation of the County Hospital (Axel Høeg-Hansen, 1898) into a new residential area was recently approved.’
